Great Hikes in 2003

A list of my hikes in 2003
2003
- 27 December: Up the Jeep Track as far as the Alexandra Dam. A stunning
clear day, and a stunning view across the bay, even better because they've
felled a lot of the alien pine plantations in the area.
- 22 December: An evening hike up to the block house.
- 3 October: The Cape Dune Mole-rat Trail, in Sedgefield. Extremely
scenic, about 9 km. Also the oddest name I've seen for a trail other than
the Fanie Botha Trail.
- 27 September: The Cederberg 101 hike, leading a group of 15 Scouts
and 6 adults. From Sanddrif up to the Wolfberg Cracks, through the narrow
crack, 8 km there and back across the top to the Wolfberg Arch (in the rain),
and back down again via the wide crack.
- 29 May: A couple of short walks in the magnificent Golden Gate Highlands
Park, including visiting a "vulture restaurant" and the Holkrans
trail.
- 22 May: A 7km trail overlooking the Blyde River Canyon, starting
at the Aventura resort.
- 20 May: Visiting various waterfalls in the vicinity of Sabie in Mpumalanga.
The Fanie Botha trail wanders through the forests in this area (why they don't
they rename this trail is a great mystery!)
- 9 April: A Scout night hike up Lions Head. Had the whole peak to
ourselves because it was a cold evening with rain threatening, but never materialising.
Very pleasant.
- 21 March: Palmiet River walk in the Kogelberg nature reserve. Pleasant,
easy, lots of nice swimming stops.
- March: Day hike up Kloof Corner (quite exposed, and very spectacular),
and back down India Venster
- 31 January - 1 February: Hike to the Scout hut on Table Mountain.
An evening hike up Cecilia Gorge and the Jeep Track, then visiting Tranquility
Cracks the next morning, and then back down Nursery Ravine to Kirstenbosch.
