Ian Webb Page

Somehow you've stumbled into this web page about me. I'm a 30-something software developer, hiker, Scout leader and webmaster, living in Rondebosch, Cape Town, South Africa, and happily married to Carol. Yes, my name is Webb, and yes, I am a webmaster. I can't help it; I got the name long before it became world-wide.

Work

I work as a senior Java developer for Mosaic Software in Cape Town, specialising in EFT for the retail market (translation: writing the software that lets you use your credit card to buy groceries). Apart from the retail aspects of EFT, I also specialise in EMV smart cards,

Previously I designed web sites for the World Scout Bureau in Switzerland, and worked for the CAMA Archive, a project in documenting Contemporary African Music and Art.

Scouting

My involvement in Scouting starts at First Claremont group, which I run as Troop Scouter. I am also webmaster for the South African Scout Association.

In 1999 and 2000, I spent nine months designing web sites for the World Scout Bureau in Switzerland, and at two of its regional offices in the Philippines and Chile.

Finally, I would like to deny firmly that the famous letter from a Scout (which does the rounds on the net) has anything to do with me. But I like it anyway, so here is the Scoutmaster Webb letter.

Hiking

My hiking web site offers a personal view of the great hikes to be found in the Western Cape.

Research

Until 1998 I was a postgraduate student at the Computer Science Department at the University of Cape Town. My research involved the use of Optic Flow Analysis for computer animation. I was awarded an MSc degree with distinction in 1998.
